Transmission & Grid Integration

Element Power develop projects to enable effective and reliable integration and transmission of high-voltage renewable electricity from the producer to the consumer. Not only do we develop our own renewable energy projects, we also work with transmission operators to achieve the same goal: decarbonisation with greater grid security and quality of supply. With five HVDC/interconnector projects in various stages of development within our portfolio, we are currently developing a total of 3500MW across some 1040 kilometres. 

As we continue to expand our capabilities to deliver and accommodate increasing quantities of renewable energy, we offer:

Grid Services and Integration:

  • We develop transmission, HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) and interconnection of power systems;
  • We develop projects which deliver system and ancillary services, and smart grids;
  • We develop storage and demand management systems.
     

Grid Connection:  

  • We manage site selection and determine suitability of the site;
  • We manage the application process including costs, securities, timing, relationships;
  • We assess timescales risk and manage improvements, thereby minimising costs incurred; 
  • We are experienced with technical design and power systems engineering;
  • We deliver solutions to technical barriers;
  • We ascertain grid connection capacity, increasing or decreasing as needed.
     

Grid Operation: 

  • We ensure grid operation charges and constraints are minimised;
  • We optimise operation to minimise downtime and outages;
  • We manage and control system costs & charges;
  • We ensure ancillary and system services revenues are maximised;
  • Our grid expertise ensure operational revenues in PPA/operation are maximised.
     

Element Power has also developed commercial IP that may be deployed to provide system services to TSOs. These services include Fast Frequency Response (FFR), Synchronous Inertial Response (SIR), Fast Post-Fault Active Power Recovery (FPFAPR), Dynamic Reactive Response (DRR) and Steady-State Reactive Power (SSRP), some or all of which are currently procured in the Irish and GB markets.

RELATED PROJECTS AND NEWS:

Greenlink is a dedicated interconnector between UK and Ireland connecting the two electricity markets and National Grid with EirGrid systems. See www.greenlinkinterconnector.eu for details.

Greenlink has been approved as eligible for assessment by Ofgem for a Cap and Floor regulatory regimeCF Eligibility Decision) and application granted for an Interconnector License ( Grant of License) with Ofgem. The license currently uses the Greenwire™ name (recognising its origins) and is expected to have a name change to Greenlink in the future.
