Maali Interconnector

Element Power is proposing to develop the Maali interconnector between Shetland, UK and Norway using subsea cables connecting the Statnett and National Grid mainland networks.

Project phase:
Minimum MW Capacity:
Number of Converter Stations:
Approximate cable length onshore:
To be determined
Approximate cable length offshore:
380 km

The Maali interconnector will create a coordinated meshed network between Norway and the United Kingdom, via Shetland, an island with considerable renewable energy potential, proving benefits on both sides of the cable by:

  • managing the supply and price of energy by being able to import more electricity at a lower price, when required;
  • increasing security of supply;
  • decarbonisation of electricity and energy;
  • enabling greater generation and consumption of renewable energy in the UK and Norway thereby replacing fossil fuels.
