Coollegrean Wind Farm begins operation

Commercial operations have begun at the Coollegrean Wind Farm in Co. Kerry, Ireland, following completion of commissioning of the 17.5MW project by construction manager Element Power. Element Power developed the project and has managed construction for the owner, NTR, since May 2016.

Coollegrean wind farm consists of seven Nordex N90 2.5MW turbines and will generate enough clean, renewable power to meet the needs of around 15,500 homes a year.

The project was first energised at the end of January via the 38 kV onsite substation and an underground cable to Cordal 110kV substation. Civil engineering was undertaken by L&M Keating Ltd and electrical works by Obelisk Power Systems.

Conor Calnan, Group Construction Manager for Element Power, said;

“We are delighted to have successfully delivered the Coollegrean wind farm to its owner, NTR. This adds another high value project to the portfolio developed and built by Element Power and will contribute to Ireland’s economy, energy security and low carbon ambitions.

Several site-specific challenges were successfully negotiated. These included a complex grid connection, working in a remote location against a very definite impending planning deadline, and erecting turbines during winter months.”

During the project, Element Power developed a good working relationship with the landowners and local community. A greener homes scheme and community benefit fund has been set up and will be rolled out in 2018.

Joe Dalton, Asset Management Director for NTR, the project owner, said:

“We are pleased with the management of the works and to have worked with Element Power on this project which is now operational, adding another 17.5MW to our Fund 1 portfolio to deliver sustainable revenues over the long term.”
