Operations have begun at the Tynemouth Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), developed by Element Power and owned by the Italian electricity utility, Enel S.p.A. (“Enel”). The 25MW/12.5MWh project is located in Newcastle, UK, and was officially opened today in an event attended by the Mayor of North Tyneside Council.
The Tynemouth project is supported by a four-year contract with National Grid to provide grid-balancing services. Element Power was one of only seven successful companies awarded an Enhanced Frequency Response (EFR) contract in National Grid’s 2016 tender, out of 243 competing bids. The price secured for the Tynemouth project – approximately £12/MWh - was one of the best and 17% above the average.
The 12.5MWh power import and export service at the Tynemouth BESS will act to control system frequency, which would otherwise vary as load and generation changes on a second by second basis.
Element Power and its contractors successfully originated, developed and consented the Tynemouth BESS project and sold the project at construction-ready stage to Enel in May 2017. Element Power has continued to support Enel to ensure full delivery of the project in line with National Grid’s guidelines.
Guy Nicholson, Europe Grid Manager at Element Power, said;
“We are delighted to have assisted Enel in delivering one of the UK’s first battery storage projects providing ancillary value-added services to the grid, an important milestone for Element Power.
EFR technology has reduced the costs of frequency response by about 60%, bringing greater efficiencies to the running of the grid, enabling the integration of more renewable energy and providing cost-savings for electricity consumers.
All this has been made possible by highly experienced, agile and innovative developers like Element Power, who can locate sites, obtain planning and manage contracts to deliver competitive projects like Tynemouth”.
The Tynemouth BESS has been part of a portfolio of projects that Element Power is developing in the battery energy storage and flexible grid services sectors in the UK and Ireland.
Guy Nicholson continued;
“We see significant potential for growth in the battery storage and flexible grid services markets. Element Power is progressing new opportunities and technologies to transform the operation of our power systems. We foresee being able to routinely run grid systems on 100% renewable energy supported by zero carbon ancillary service technologies.”
